What is Liposuction?

Liposuction works by breaking up fat cells and suctioning them out of the body. Liposuction is a very effective procedure for those who have stubborn areas of fat that don’t seem to be going away with diet and exercise—so if you’ve been exercising and you feel as though you’ve tried every diet available and you’re still not satisfied with your appearance, liposuction may be a perfect option for you.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery provides patients with plenty of liposuction options. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sundin will go over your medical history, your personal aesthetic goals, and any questions or concerns you have in order to determine what specific liposuction procedure is right for you.

What Happens During a Liposuction Procedure?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive outpatient surgery that is usually performed under anesthesia with sedation to minimize discomfort.

During a liposuction procedure in Northern Virginia, a thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through a very small incision within the natural folds of your skin in order to minimize scarring.

The excess fat is loosened and targeted tissues are broken up by the cannula, which then vacuums the fat cells away and out of the body.

Liposuction Anesthesia Options

At the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, liposuction is performed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia. We work with a licensed master aesthetician to ensure absolute safety for our patients.

With general anesthesia you are completely unconscious, whereas with local anesthesia, a specific area of the body is numbed and you will be awake. Most of our patients have less pain following the surgery because we administer a longer-acting local anesthesia as part of the procedure.

What can I expect during recovery from liposuction?

After your liposuction in Washington DC, you will be given a compression garment to wear in order for your body to heal and adjust. Most patients are able to return to work in about a week or after the surgery. Although most patients have some swelling post-surgery, you will still be able to see a noticeable improvement in the shape of your body very soon after the procedure. After the swelling has subsided in 4-6 weeks, improvements will be even more apparent. About three months after the procedure, your final contours will be visible. It’s important to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise in order to keep your new look.
